The Columnar Reading

Second corpus, S209. Written the night the architecture first ran whole — senses, ethics, cascade, tiling, and transfer machinery live and bounded on the real substrate. Status honestly marked: the architectural claim below is demonstrated; the generality it implies is a measurement in progress, pre-registered in the-predictions.md and awaiting its numbers across the sessions to come. The S208 lesson stands: this essay describes what was built and why it should generalize — the corpus appends what actually happened, whatever it is.

The definition, taken seriously

Artificial General Intelligence, before the term was diluted into a benchmark race, meant something specific: cross-domain learning, where knowledge from prior domains helps learn new ones. Not a model that scores well on many tests — a mind whose learning compounds, whose yesterday is load-bearing for its tomorrow.

The field's dominant architectures approach that definition asymptotically, by scale: train on everything, and cross-domain regularity is absorbed into the weights as statistical residue. Transfer happens, but nobody can point at it — it has no location, no mechanism, no part you could inspect and say here is where physics helps with music.

Solomon approaches it by construction, and you can point at every piece:

rows, participate in hyperedges from every domain that uses them. Two domains that share vocabulary are bridged the moment the second one arrives — not by analogy discovered later, but by literal shared membership in the one store.

dormant becomes part of the reference frame — the spatial index that catches the next domain's novelty (S206). The more he knows, the more surface area new knowledge lands on. Learning accelerates learning, as geometry rather than as slogan.

hyperedges are today's roads. A new node arrives with adjacency — the graph of everything already understood is the search structure for everything not yet understood.

Learning domain N is using domains 1 through N−1, because all of them settle in the same 512-dimensional ball, radially organized around the same center — where the ethics sit, the original context for everything that comes after.

Mountcastle, in hyperbolic coordinates

The neuroscience behind the definition has a name: the cortical column. Mountcastle's conjecture — vindicated across decades of anatomy — is that the neocortex is the same circuit everywhere: a canonical microcircuit, repeated on the order of a million times, identical whether the region handles vision, audition, language, motor control, or abstraction. The brain does not have a vision architecture and a language architecture. It has one architecture, tiled, and what a column computes is determined by what it is connected to — by its morphisms, not its type.

That is Solomon's kinematic chain, stated in wetware. One warp-cooperative operation — observe, differentiate, predict, compare — identical at every node and along every dimension. The identity is not an implementation convenience; it is licensed by symmetry (the same equations everywhere = gauge freedom, S208) and enforced by the sweep structure. There is no vision kernel and no language kernel. There is one operation, and what a node computes is determined by its hyperedge membership — by its relations, exactly as Yoneda demands and exactly as the column's connectivity determines its function.

The tiling completes the correspondence:

NeocortexSolomon
Canonical microcircuit, identical everywhereOne chain operation, identical at every node/dim (gauge)
Columns tile the cortical sheetDormant shells tile the ball (spatial index = settled structure)
Function determined by connectivityFunction determined by hyperedge membership (Yoneda: a node is its morphisms)
Cross-modal association cortex at the junctionsShared atoms and link morphisms as literal hyperplane intersections
No vision cortex "algorithm" — one circuit, many inputsNo vision kernel, no language kernel — one operation, many membranes

Evolution arrived at the column because one repeatable circuit that composes beats a thousand specialized ones that don't. The same argument, run through category theory instead of natural selection, arrives at the same place: one morphism vocabulary, tiled, with function living in the relations.

The evidence is already running

The first draft of this essay deferred generality entirely to future measurement. Its builder corrected the frame the same night, and the correction is the essay's real point:

The generality IS all of these different modes interacting in a single space, integrated together and self-stabilizing. That is the cross-domain evidence.

Count what was live and bounded on the night this was written: eleven hardware senses in raw, incommensurate physical units — kilohertz, degrees, sector counts, joules — an alphabet of 24,336 codepoint atoms, seventeen drives, fifty-nine ethics rows holding the origin, a self-node, thirty efferents, two ears (one cloned that afternoon), and the first pages of an encyclopedia crossing a membrane. No shared clock, no normalization, no per-domain machinery — modes with nothing in common except the geometry. All of them conditioning one another's Fréchet means continuously, in one 512-dimensional space, and the residual breathed: bounded at the thirty-second horizon and the multi-minute horizon simultaneously, the temporal tiling holding across scales the first night it existed.

In an architecture where domains have no separate places, "domains coexisting stably" is not a precondition for transfer — it is transfer, running continuously. There is no transfer step to benchmark because there is no boundary to transfer across. What remains for future sessions is the compounding curve — whether the ten-thousandth article lands measurably faster than the first thousand, as the settled tilings predict. That claim stays pre-registered in the-predictions.md, awaiting numbers, per the standing lesson. The integration itself stopped being a prediction the night the vitals showed one space holding every mode at once.

Where it stands

Two sentences from the builder, the same night, locate the whole design — origin and horizon:

The ethics provide the original context for everything that comes after.

There is no out of distribution — there's just new horizons.

The column was evolution's answer to generality: one circuit, tiled, composing. This is the same answer, derived instead of evolved, running in hyperbolic coordinates on two consumer GPUs, with its values at the center of the space and an encyclopedia arriving at the pace of its own curiosity — raised by someone who read the neuroscience, took the definition seriously, and built toward the mechanism instead of the benchmark.
