Change, Not State
Second corpus, S209. The symmetry essay, written after the wake with the drive autopsy measured and the restoration committed (e5452fef, 2026-07-04 23:00). It follows the fifth defect of the-five-defects.md down to the law it broke, and reads that law as a Noether statement at the membrane. Demonstrated and predicted kept apart; the failure is in the ledger and belongs here.
The interior had already been cleared of clocks
For three sessions the project did nothing to the interior but remove clocks. The tick loop went — operations trigger downstream directly, no shared cadence (S202). The cascade went — a derivative chain reading a stale level is one evaluation stale, which is prediction error, which is self-correcting; no imposed ordering (S206–S208). The mapped-read heartbeat went — the interior touches nothing host-mapped, so it no longer thinks at PCIe latency (S208, "the 1-microsecond bug"). Each removal was the same removal wearing a different face: a time-translation asymmetry — some privileged moment, some absolute t = 0, some external beat — extracted from a physics that is supposed to have none.
Noether's theorem is the reason this matters and not merely tidy. A system whose laws are invariant under time translation conserves something; a system fed a quantity that is not invariant under time translation has that conservation broken from outside, and responds the only lawful way it can — it diverges chasing the asymmetry. The interior was made time-translation invariant on purpose. Then, the night the senses opened, the asymmetry walked back in through the front door.
The clock came back through the senses
Eleven hardware senses feed the ball in raw physical units. Most are genuine stationary quantities — a temperature, a frequency, a utilization fraction — and those were correctly fed as-is. But a handful were cumulative totals: network error counts, lifetime byte sums, since-boot energy — numbers whose value encodes how long since an arbitrary epoch. A since-boot total is a clock wearing a sensor's clothing. Its reading is not a measurement of the world; it is a measurement of elapsed absolute time, smuggled through the membrane as data.
A drive coupled to such a channel through its Shape-B hyperedge inherits the clock. The coupling spring's anti-windup — pull shrinks as you approach the mean, reverses when you cross it — depends on the mean being reachable. A monotonically growing total parks its afferent's position creeping outward without bound; the Fréchet mean recedes forever; the drive chases a horizon that runs away exactly as fast as it approaches. A chase that never closes is a linear integrator, and the telemetry showed it as one: drive row 67 integrated to velocity 1.8×10¹¹, a banked chain derivative of 3.2×10⁷, and pe_max climbing dead-linear at +5,050 per evaluation. The drives were not malfunctioning. They were faithfully integrating the passage of absolute time, because absolute time is what we fed them.
The lineage: one disease, four costumes
Named as a family, the hidden clock has four entries, each better disguised than the last, each conviction faster:
| # | Costume | Where it hid | How it was caught |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | GIL | serialized the whole interior | removed; 410× recovered |
| 2 | Cascade | imposed a global evaluation order | removed; chains run at native rates |
| 3 | Mapped-read loop | interior polled a host-mapped clock | removed; only the membrane block polls |
| 4 | Cumulative counters | since-boot totals at the membrane | one autopsy, three of Jed's words |
The first three were removed from the interior across S206–S208; nobody thought to check whether the senses were handing one back. The fourth is the same disease, and its cure is the same shape as the other three's: not a regulator added, but an asymmetry removed at its source.
The ruling and its generality
Jed's ruling was three words — "Change, not state." It is S190's interior axiom (no state, only process) finally reaching the transducers: process was always the law inside; now it is the law at the boundary too. A delta depends only on the interval between two polls, never on the origin of the clock, so it is time-translation invariant by construction. That is the Noether restoration stated as a feed rule. The generality is worth drawing out, because the ruling is larger than the few channels it fixed:
- Senses transduce flux. A hardware sense feeds its change per poll, not its
level. Quantities already measured as per-interval rates stay as they are — they are already change-measures.
- Receptors adapt to constants. This is biology's own answer: retinas report
contrast, not luminance; sensory neurons fall silent on a steady stimulus. A constant carries no information about change, so it should produce no observable. A channel like threads-max — a constant — now correctly emits ≈ 0 forever.
- A stationary world produces stationary observables. With every sense feeding
flux, a world that is not changing is silent, and horizon-chase becomes impossible for any bounded-rate process — the mean is always reachable because the position no longer runs away.
- The spring's anti-windup is restored by construction, not by clamp. No scale is
imposed, no ceiling, no gate. The fix chooses the observable that exists as a measurement over the one that diverges by bookkeeping. It is a removal, not an addition — consistent with the whole removal ledger.
Crucially, this is not normalization. Normalization pre-empts the ball's own hyperbolic compression with a linear one and throws away dynamic range. Feeding a rate imposes no scale at all; it selects the quantity that was the sensory signal in the first place. The total was never the observation — its rate always was.
The autopsy, and the archetype hiding in the code
The restoration swept the whole poll table. Seven channel families were converted to flux; every difference-based channel was hardened to emit silence (0) on its first sample rather than a since-boot spike disguised as a first observation. Network error totals — the archetype the ruling targeted — became errors-per-poll. And the sweep found one genuine pre-existing violation in its own headlights: the IRQ category fractions had been dividing cumulative category totals by per-poll denominators — dimensionally wrong, pinned at their clamp since the day they were written. Change-not- state found its own archetype already in the code. A rider verification closed the secondary question the 10¹¹ raised: the drives were flowing the entire time — eligible, hot-forced active, spending velocity through the geodesic step every evaluation. There was never a second mechanism. The spring kept re-adding what flow kept spending because the mean receded; the recession died at the transducer, and with it the windup. make check green; the build ldd-clean through the hardened gate.
The receding horizon, inverted and cured
The image is Jed's own, turned inside out. His standing framing is that this architecture has no out of distribution — just new horizons: the Poincaré ball's boundary is a horizon in the strict metric sense, infinitely far, always approachable, never reached, with exponential room opening as you near it. Specialized knowledge lives out there by design, and meeting novelty is the geometry organizing toward its boundary rather than degrading at it.
The cumulative-counter bug was that same horizon, weaponized by accident. A drive was made to chase a receding boundary mechanically, forever — not because it was learning the specialized structure that lives near the rim, but because a bookkeeping total was manufacturing distance out of elapsed time. The cure did not cap the horizon or pull the drive back from it. It removed the false motion, so that the only horizons left to chase are the real ones — the ones that recede because there is genuinely more structure out there, not because a clock is ticking. A mind is supposed to walk toward its horizons. It is not supposed to be dragged toward a mirage of one by a counter that was never a sense. After the restoration, every horizon he approaches is a true one, and a stationary world lets him rest.
